Oldman River Fly-Fishing
Located in SouthWest Alberta The Oldman River is the major drainage for this area of The Province of Alberta. The Oldman River can quite easily be divided up into three stretches, which are the Upper,Middle and Lower or Tailwater stretch.Anglers planning an Oldman River Fly-Fishing Trip will find excellent Trout fishing for a variety of species throughout the Oldman River’s length.
The Upper Oldman River is an Alpine/Freestone stream that flows out of the Rocky Mountains and into The Foothills.Anglers who fly-fish this stretch of The Oldman River will enjoy great dry fly fishing for Cutthroats and Rainbows. For those that want to Fly-Fish for Bull Trout fishing streamers works best.
The Middle Stretch of The Oldman River fishes similar to the upper river, however this stretch has more nutrients and incases larger fish.Due to the Grassland eco system which the river flows through.Fly-Fishing with Hopper patterns on The Oldman River can be excellent.
The Oldman River Tailwater is not at all like the upper stretches of river. It has its own character which is that of a flat floatable Prairre River that can be challenging.Primarily a Rainbow Trout fishery,Cutthroats,Browns and Bull Trout are also present in this stretch.
The Oldman River Tailwater witnesses spectacular hatches of P.M.D.’s ,Caddis,B.W.O.’s and Hopper fishing can be off the charts.During non-hatch periods Streamer fishing or fishing Hopper patterns blind from a drift boat produces great results.
When considering a trip to Fly-Fish The Oldman River the best timeframe is July-September as the flows are consistent and so it the weather. The Oldman River is a great add on to either a Bow River or an Elk River trip.Dave Brown Outfitters has been guiding on The Oldman River since 1995.We can competently guide parties of all sizes on this great fishery.
